Biography
Part magician, part comedian, and totally dysfunctional, Nathan Allen performs a highly-caffeinated blend of magic and comedy!
Yes, Nathan Allen is a magician, but don't be fooled - you will see NO
rabbit, NO tuxedo, and NO sparkly boxes in this show. Instead, Nathan
combines his twisted sense of humor, sleight-of-hand magic skills, and
hilarious audience participation into one of the very few magic shows
on the face of the planet that is both geared for adults AND funny.
The best trick up Nathan's sleeve is his ability to connect
with a crowd, and it's a trick he can pull off whether he is at a
corporate event or a biker bar. With a knack for being a bit naughty
and tons of fun, without being offensive, Nathan's personality-driven
performances have been described as "Edgy, funny comedy and magic at

The International Brotherhood of Magicians recently presented
Nathan with the Iowa Magic Award, based on his technical skills and
entertainment value. He was the only magician featured in "The
Grassroots Comedy Tour" and in "The Super Bowl of Stand-Up." His
entertainment services won him a full-ride business scholarship to
attend college. Of the dozens of magicians in Iowa, Nathan was the only
one selected to perform onstage at Iowa Governor Culver's Inaugural
Gala. And yet, in a typical example of his priorities, he insists that
he is most proud of being elected Class Clown.
More than just something out of thin air, Nathan's
slow-but-steady rise in the entertainment industry is the result of a
15-year, love-hate obsession with his work. He started learning magic
when he was only 8 years old and did his first paid performance when he
was just 12. Now, at the age of 25, Nathan has a long list of
performances under his belt, for companies including 3M, Alliant
Energy, Ford, Honda, RadioShack, Swiss Valley Farms, and Wal-Mart, to
name just a few. In addition to countless corporate engagements at
banquets, awards nights, and holiday parties, Nathan also works at
nightclubs, casinos, class reunions, clubs, colleges, golf courses,
festivals, proms, and private parties throughout the upper Midwest.
Nathan is currently based in Des Moines, Iowa. He drinks way
too much coffee, and in his spare time, he enjoys arguing with the
television. When it's turned off.

Q: How did you do that?
A: Smoke and mirrors. And wires. And my sleeves. Oh, and a trap door, too. Trap doors are cool.
Q: WHY did you do that?
A: It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Q: What is your show like?
A: I perform what is generally called "Comedy Magic", which is a form of live entertainment that combines stage magic (also known as parlor, club, platform, or cabaret magic), situational humor, stand-up comedy, and audience participation.
Q: So are you more like a magician, or a comedian?
A: I
think of myself as a magician, but after a show recently a guy said I
was "75% comedian and 25% magician." So I could be wrong. Here's the
sad truth: Most comedians don't claim me because of the magic, and most
magicians don't like me because of the comedy.
Q: Are you any good?
A: Don't ask me. Take a look at my reviews to see what people are saying.
Q: Why do you perform for adults, and not little kids like most other magicians?
A: My comedy-magic shows are geared for an adult audience because my personality, style, and sense of humor happen to be best appreciated by adults. That's just who I am.
Q: What do you have up your sleeves?
A: My arms. Stop touching me.
Q: How edgy are your shows?
A: If my show was a movie, it would probably be rated "PG-13". My show is a bit naughty, in a good-natured way, but NOT explicit. There is no graphic violence, there is no hate speech, and there are no topless dancers, but the shows ARE targeted at adults and may contain adult humor, language, themes, references, or situations which may not be appropriate for, or appreciated by, children.
Q: Can you pull a coin out of my ear?
A: You should probably go see a doctor about that. It might be infected.
Q: Do you cheat at card games?
A: (no comment)
Q: Do you use any audience participation in your shows?
A: Definitely. People love to see their friends or coworkers brought onstage to become part of the show. And it's all in good fun, so don't hesitate to grab a seat up front and center.
Q: Would you make somebody disappear for me?
A: You don't want me; you want one of the Soprano boys for that job.
Q: What's the difference between you and other magicians?
A: The biggest difference is I am less interested in "fooling" people and more focused on creating laughter and having fun with the group - I don't take myself too seriously onstage. Another difference is, instead of being one of those "jack of all trades, master of none" performers who tries to be all things to all people, I specialize and do only ONE type of show - my comedy-magic stage show for adults. So those are the major differences. Oh, and I don't have a rabbit.
Q: Why don't you have a rabbit?
A: I don't know... I just don't... Well, I do have a "rabbit in a hat" tattoo, if that counts.
Q: Can I see your tattoo?
A: I'm too sober. Ask me later.
Q: Why don't you use big sparkly magician props like everybody else?
A: I don't like to carry around a lot of big boxes because my hands are already full dealing with my emotional baggage.
Q: For what size of crowds do you usually perform?
A: Depending on the particular event I'm working for, my audiences range anywhere from 30 to 300 people, and most audiences are between 50 and 150 people.
Q: Do you do any close-up, strolling, or mingle magic?
A: Nope, sorry. I USED to. I still very much enjoy WATCHING a talented close-up magician, and one of my best friends is the most mind-blowing close-up magician I've ever seen... But actually PERFORMING close-up magic just isn't my cup of tea.
Q: For what type of events do you usually perform?
A: Some of the types of events I perform for include Awards Nights, Bachelor or Bachelorette Parties, Banquets, Bars or Taverns, Beer Gardens, Casinos, Celebrations, Class Reunions, Clubs, Coffee Shops, Colleges and Universities, Comedy Clubs, Community Events, Company Parties, Conventions, Corporate Events, Country Clubs and Golf Courses, Festivals, Fraternity or Sorority Functions, Fund Raisers, Graduation Parties, Grand Openings, Holiday Parties, Hotel Lounges, Nightclubs, Post Prom Parties, Private Parties, Resorts, Theaters, etc.
Q: Why are you called "the maniac of magic"?
A: I adopted the handle "Maniac of Magic" when somebody pointed out the parallels between my onstage behavior and symptoms of mania, which include excitement, hyperactivity, elevation of mood, talkativeness, and impulsiveness. Plus, it sounds kinda cool.
Q: Can you read minds?
A: Only my own. But I'm only right about half the time.
Q: What is the duration of your performance?
A: The exact duration depends on the particular event I'm working at, but the majority of my performances are 60 solid minutes.
Q: Could you teach me how to do a magic trick?
A: We're currently working on a crazy-fun project that deals with teaching tricks, so keep an eye on my website for announcements!
Q: Who influenced your performing style?
A: The biggest influence on my act has been every audience I've ever encountered. The next biggest influence would probably be my dysfunctional family and twisted friends. But as far as magicians, comedians, and entertainers go, that list would probably include, in no particular order... Prank Parking Tickets
